Visiting by appointment
The Library and Archives at Wroughton is free to visit and open to the public and researchers Fridays only from 10.00 to 17.00 by prior appointment only.
To enquire about an appointment please contact the team at firstname.lastname@example.org or 01793 846222.
This is not a browsing library. Visitors must specify the material they wish to consult in advance of their visit to allow staff to provide guidance and prepare materials as appropriate.
How to order materials
On rare occasions we may have to cancel a booking but we will inform visitors in good time and make every effort to accommodate them in the future.
We have 30 reader tables, each with electrical sockets and you are welcome to use your laptops or PDAs. There are two public PCs for accessing the library and archive catalogues and the library’s electronic resources. We also have a microfilm reader.
There is a small collection of reference material including listings of archives in the Science Museum collection.
We have photocopying and specialist digital scanning facilities and can provide copies of items from our collections – subject to copyright requirements, any access restrictions that might apply and the condition of the material. We charge for this copying service, as required by copyright law. Charges are listed on our copying request form or you can contact us for further details. Please note that payment is by cheque or credit card only. We accept most credit cards except American Express or Diners card.

There are recordable CCTV cameras to protect our collections and to protect you. Most library collections are security tagged and an alarm will sound if any are taken out of the Reading Room.
We welcome research-based group visits at Wroughton. This service is available on Tuesdays and you must book at least a month in advance.
Your visit will be focused on how to research and use our collections and we will highlight which materials are most appropriate for your needs.
Explore our collection online
We have improved our online collection, not only making it easier to search and filter results but delivering high-quality imagery and adding more in-depth information.
This work, which gives you fast access to over 150,000 objects and archives from the Science Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, National Media Museum and National Railway Museum, is now available for you to access.
Please be advised that the website is still being tested and improved, work is still underway to digitise thousands more items from our collection.
We offer a free enquiry service to help you find out what’s in our collections. We respond to enquiries within 20 working days but responses are limited to enquiries that concern our Library & Archive Collections only. We can also provide copies for our collections
