Leave a gift in your will

We strongly advise that you consult a qualified legal professional when drawing up or amending your will. The Law Society can assist you in finding a local legal professional.

When it comes to leaving a legacy gift it is worth bearing in mind the impact it will have. The Science Museum was founded in 1857 and since then we have evolved and responded to the many changing demands we have faced. By leaving us an unrestricted gift you can ensure that we continue to meet the new and exciting challenges that lie ahead.

There are four main types of gift you can leave in your will:

  • Residuary: A residuary legacy is a percentage share (for example, 50%) of the remainder of your estate that can be given to the Museum once all other commitments have been settled.
  • Pecuniary: This is a fixed cash sum (for example £5,000) which you can, if you choose, index-link to ensure its value is maintained in line with inflation.
  • Reversionary: If you would like to ensure that your love ones are provided for, for the rest of their lives, a reversionary gift will allow you to look after them whilst also naming the Science Museum as the ultimate beneficiary of your estate.
  • Specific: This is a very broad term for gifts that relate to a specific named item, which could be an object to be placed in the collection, stocks or shares, royalties, or naming us as a beneficiary on a life  insurance or death in service policy.

As a charity exempt from registration all gifts left to us are tax-exempt and there are a number of tax incentives which could benefit your loved ones if you do decide to leave a gift to us.

Remembering a loved one

If someone close to you had a particular fondness for the Science Museum a gift in their memory can be a wonderful way to honour them.

It might be that you suggest donating to the Science Museum in their memory as an alternative to flowers at the funeral, or you can simply make a dedicated donation in their honour.
