The InfoAge+ app features four creative challenges for your students to help them find out more about communication technologies during a visit to the Information Age gallery.

  • Top Tech – choose an object, create a trump card and use it to do battle with objects from the gallery. Can you beat the Museum? 
  • After Dark – what if the objects came to life after the Museum closes? Imagine conversations between the objects by filling in the speech bubbles in a comic strip. 
  • Newsflash – find a news story in the gallery that will please your demanding editor, and create a video report about it. 
  • My Timeline – put yourself into a 200-year-plus timeline of incredible stories about information technologies and add your own objects. 

The videos and pictures your students produce will be saved to the camera roll of the phone or tablet used, to view again back at home or in the classroom.

Before the visit

Divide the class into small teams and print out a copy of the Great Object Hunt activity sheet for each group.

Our version of the activity sheet is based on a visit to the Making the Modern World gallery on the ground floor. However you could create your own version for use in another gallery or for a particular topic or theme. Keep the questions open and light-hearted to allow students to be creative in their choice of objects; don't aim for students to find one particular exhibit.

A clipboard and pen for each team will make it easier to record things on the activity sheet.

If you are using video cameras or cameras you'll need one per team (plus some spare batteries, if appropriate).

During the visit

Organise the students into their teams and give the activity sheet and a camera to each group.

Brief students to choose an object which meets each challenge on the sheet, and take a short video clip of it, or a photo. Encourage them to look at the exhibits closely and talk about them as a team to help them make their selection. 

If making film clips ask the students to use actions and mime to communicate something about their chosen object, for example how it works or what it is used for. They should keep each clip short - no more than 10-15 seconds.

Allow 45 minutes to complete as many of the 15 challenges as possible. 

After the visit

Combine the clips from each group's camera into short films, add some music and show the films back in the classroom.

Or upload the photos to a sharing website and show the children, or print them off to make a montage.

Using this activity in the Science Museum will help students to:

  • make links between the objects and science in their everyday lives
  • develop discussion and communication skills
  • develop observation skills.

This activity is intended to develop communication skills and foster a broad understanding of how science and technology relate to our everyday lives.

However, the challenges could easily be tailored by teachers and group leaders to support learning in specific areas of the curriculum.
