Professional Development

These courses are delivered by our experienced Learning Team on site at the Museum to make the most of our unique facilities and resources.

All are developed in consultation with teachers and educational specialists. This ensures they support your individual needs and national priorities.

Courses cost £130 per person, including refreshments, lunch and an exclusive Science Museum teachers' goody bag.

Any of the courses below can be delivered on a day of your choosing for whole-school or faculty CPD, at a discounted rate. This is a great way to support your school's learning strategy. Learning in museums (FS, KS1, KS2)

A practical and hands-on course, covering everything you need to know to make the most of museums when you visit, and embed your visit into your classroom teaching. This course uses the Science Museum as an example, but is useful for teachers across the curriculum who run visits to museums. Teaching science in the Early Years and KS1 (FS & KS1)

Explore how creative approaches can be used in science in the Early Years. You’ll try activities and share ideas that give children first-hand experience of exploration, observation, and problem-solving. You will also experience how the Science Museum can support and enhance the learning of science and literacy at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Telling tales: using stories to support science learning in the Early Years (FS & KS1)

Try out techniques for adapting traditional stories to bring out science concepts and vocabulary relevant to early learning goals. You’ll see one of the Museum’s tried-and-tested storytelling sessions. Then you’ll develop your own storytelling session to use in school.

Creating a buzz: exciting science weeks and clubs (KS1 & KS2)

Running a science week or science club is highly rewarding, but the task of making it happen can be daunting. We’ll provide advice, contacts and ideas for activities to help you run a science week or club at your school. Teachers who have already done it will share their experience, giving you a realistic picture of the benefits and how to avoid the pitfalls. You 'll have a go at tried-and-tested activities that you can take away and use immediately, and draw up a plan of action based on what you have learned from the day.

Learning outside the classroom: science in informal settings (KS3 & KS4)

This course will enable you to maximise learning during school visits, and develop strategies to implement Learning Outside the Classroom requirements and current learning theory in Science. It's an excellent complement to the Learning in Museums course above.

Effective discussions in How Science Works: Talk Science (KS3 & KS4)
