Talk Science

Talk Science is a course that teaches secondary Science teachers innovative tools and techniques to engage and inspire debate about contemporary science. Courses are running nationwide and the Talk Science website is packed with ideas, techniques and resources.

With recent changes to the KS4 curriculum, and imminent changes to other key stages and the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland, discussion has become a hot topic in the classroom.

The Talk Science course aims to support teachers in facilitating discussion that will allow students to actively engage with the science they learn in school and help them understand how science impacts on their lives. The day is hands-on and will teach you how to construct and run discussion events for the classroom. Sessions include mystery boxes, event formats, powerful questions, planning discussion lessons and facilitation skills. The day concludes with working in small groups to prepare your own discussion lesson to take away and use at school.

The Talk Science website showcases many of the techniques that we teach on the course, plus tools, techniques and resources that other teachers have contributed. You can create a profile and give feedback on techniques that you have tried, and maybe even add a few of your own.

The course currently forms part of a BP-supported project called Enterprising Science, which, in conjunction with the BP Trading Challenge roadshow, demonstrates the benefits of discussion in and out of the classroom.

If your school is interested in the Trading Challenge roadshow and the Talk Science course please visit the Enterprising Science website to book a visit: www.enterprisingscience.com

Note: At present Talk Science is only offered to schools and teachers participating in the Enterprising Science project, but watch this space for further details of courses running through the Science Museum and regional Science Learning Centres.
