VCS3 synthesiser by EMS
‘Synthesisers provided a wide open palette of colours and sounds to play with, but you still had to choose what you wanted to do and learn the discipline of this new technological form.’ Dick Mills
Histories of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop tend to divide its history into the ‘pre-synthesiser’ and ‘post-synthesiser’ periods. The Workshop bought its first synthesiser, a VCS3 by EMS, in 1970, the same year that the Science Museum bought this example. It was soon to be heard in the incidental music for Doctor Who and many other programmes.
