Letter to the Editor of Nature, 1974
In the 1970s, Hawking began working to combine the two cornerstones of modern physics, general relativity and quantum theory. Conventional wisdom said that nothing could escape from a black hole, but using quantum theory Hawking showed that they could emit radiation. Mini black holes could even disappear completely. In this letter he explains to the editor of Nature that this hypothesis might cause quite a stir.
